Jacquelyn Suarez is currently a senior at American University and is pursuing a bachelor’s degree in Communications, Legal Institutions, Economics and Government with a minor in Justice. Selected as a Program Associate (PA) for the University College program, Jacquelyn works with Professor Patrick Thaddeus Jackson, Director of the General Education Program. As a PA, she works with Dr. Jackson to implement the experiential, co-curricular and service components of the World Politics seminar. Living in the same residential neighborhood as her students, she takes on the responsibility of being a peer mentor to the freshmen students. Jacquelyn is also an honors student at AU, Student Ambassador (Outreach Ambassador of the Year ’05-’06) and a member of both the National Society of Collegiate Scholars and the Pi Sigma Alpha National Political Science Honor Society.
Previously, Jacquelyn has served American as the Deputy Director of Outreach for Student Government and as Vice President of Community Service for the Alpha Lambda Delta Honor Society. She has also worked as the Leadership Programs Assistant for the Women and Politics Institute. At the Institute she created and carried out WeLead programs, which are geared toward training the next generation of women political leaders and fostering their leadership skills, and communicated and solicited guest speakers and sponsors for events and leadership mentors. An avid horseback rider in competitive show jumping, Jacquelyn also rode for American University’s Equestrian Team. Outside of the academic and work arenas she has volunteered as a teacher’s aid and developed substitute lesson plans for the Potomac Lighthouse Public Charter School in Washington, DC.
In the past, Jacquelyn has interned with Metro Homes, LLC, a premier developer based out of Hoboken, NJ. Acting as the V.P. of Administration, she developed investor books, supervised new employees and participated in the negotiation of building permits with various city councils. She has also interned with Picatinny Arsenal in Picatinny, NJ. Working for the United States Army and Department of Defense, Jacquelyn compiled End of Month Reports for the Armament Research, Development and Engineering Center (ARDEC), compiled Armaments Engineering & Technology Center (AETC) budget summaries and counseled lead engineers on account budgeting.
This past summer she interned with Mission1st Group (M1), a government contractor headquartered in Shrewsbury, NJ. As an M1 employee, she worked with the company to meet government legal compliances, compiled fixed annual cost summaries for the CFO, created new employee manuals for the Director of HR and reconciled financial records. Starting this fall Jacquelyn will be interning with the Department of the Treasury, Office of the Comptroller of the Currency working in the areas of budget analysis, legal compliance and policy analysis. Over the next several months Jacquelyn will decide whether to attend law school or obtain a position with a multinational corporation focusing on negotiation between sovereign states or international businesses.
