(October 5, 1923 – December 6, 2002) Former Roman Catholic priest listed on the FBI’s “10 Most Wanted Fugitives” list. A World War II veteran and priest for 18 years, Berrigan participated in Civil Rights marches, sit-ins and bus boycotts. In 1967, he lead a group of radical anti-war protestors dubbed “The Baltimore Four” after they poured blood on Selective Service records at the Baltimore Customs House. Sentenced to six years in prison, he was released in 1968.
He soon after organized “The Catonsville Nine,” who burnt 378 draft files inside the Catonsville, MD draft board. He received a three and a half year prison term. He was also accused of leading a kidnapping and bombing plot in 1972, but was never convicted. He began “The Plowshares Movement,” which is connected to a long list of vandalism against military weapons factories throughout the world. He died of cancer in Baltimore at the age of 79.
The FBI says it is currently processing Berrigan’s file and estimates it will contain approximately 463 pages.
