(April 15, 1915 – October 27, 2003) The first mayor of Washington, DC under Home-Rule. Before Home-Rule, Washington also served as the District’s Mayor-Commissioner for the Johnson and Nixon administrations. Famous for ignoring FBI Director J. Edgar Hoover’s directions to shoot rioters during the Martin Luther King, Jr. riots in 1968. Washington lost his bid for a second term to Mayor Marion Barry, Jr. in 1978. The “Walter E. Washington Convention Center” was named in his honor in 2006.
