The best of 2007

By T.C.

There's something about the holidays that lends a sparkle to everything! Maybe it's just my holiday spirit kicking into gear (and a bit too much eggnog), but I wanted to share with you, the myvoicedc.com family, my favorite emails that I've received over the past year.  Oh, most of us get so many mass emails that we barely have time to read them all.  Funny how they all have a subject line which reads: "Do not delete! This is worth reading!" Curiosity gets the best of you, and despite your time constraints, you open it.  As for the following emails, I'm glad I did!  Some made me laugh out loud; one brought me to tears, and others made me really think.  A few ended up on the wall of my office, and I've added the quotes to my  own email.  Either way, they were all "keepers."  So, please keep 'em coming in 2008, at tc@sistacircle.com

Enjoy the mental workout from my favorite emails of 2007.  After you check them out, feel free to take this column and (what else?), email it to your friends.

(Wait!  Read the story below first)

The Story...
A couple in Georgia got engaged and the guy (clearly, an anointed brother) is now being
recognized all over the U.S. for the love he has for his now fiance.  He told her they would be attending her brother's birthday party, but he had actually reserved ten rooms @ the Ritz Carlton (and hired a videographer as well). Upon entering each room a special letter is being read by someone special (in their circle of friends/family), then a group prayer is given, also in each room.   Please take notice of the details in each room; different color roses and some are laced in gold.  Breathtaking.  Robert is a graduate of Southern University (a Q-dog) and is now an accountant with Home Depot's corporate office in Atlanta. My understanding is that he financially footed the bill for this weekend himself;  moved in with his sister for 6 months and saved the extra money to pay for the engagement ring and all the bells and whistles.  Make sure you have speakers because the song he chose is beautiful as well.

"The Perfect Couple"

Once upon a time, a perfect man and a perfect woman met.  After a perfect courtship, they had a perfect wedding.  Their life together was, of course, perfect.

One snowy, stormy Christmas Eve, the perfect couple was driving their perfect car along a winding road, when they noticed someone at the side of the road in distress.  Being the perfect couple, they stopped to help.  There stood Santa Claus with a huge bundle of toys.  Not wanting to disappoint any children on the eve of Christmas, the perfect couple loaded Santa and the toys into their vehicle.  Soon they were driving along delivering the toys.

Unfortunately, the driving conditions deteriorated and the perfect couple and Santa Claus had an accident.  Only one of them survived the accident.

Question:  Who was the survivor?

Answer:     The perfect woman!  You see, she's the only one who really existed in the first place.  Everyone knows there is no Santa Claus and there is no such thing as a perfect man.  Ladies, don't read any further.  Men, keep reading.

So, if there is no perfect man and no Santa Claus, the perfect woman must have been driving.  This explains why there was a car accident,  By the way, if you're a woman and you're still reading this, this brings up another point:  Women never pay attention either.

Note:  The above story was sent to me by a man, of course.

Best funny short-take

A professor wrote the words "woman without her man is nothing" on the blackboard and asked the class to punctuate.

The male students wrote:  Woman, without her man, is nothing.

The female students wrote:  Woman! Without her, man is nothing!

Dear GOD,

GOD you are my real boss, and I shall not want; for you give me peace, when chaos is all around me

GOD you gently remind me to pray and I do all things without murmuring and complaining

GOD you remind me that you are my source and not my job

And GOD you restore my sanity everyday and guide my decisions that I will honor you in all that I do

Even though I face an absurd amounts of e-mails, system crashes, unrealistic deadlines, budget cutbacks, gossiping co-workers, discriminating supervisors and an aging body that doesn't always want to cooperate when I wake in the morning; I will not stop for you are with me

GOD your presence, your peace, and your power will see me through

And GOD you raise me up, even when they fail to promote me and GOD you claim me as yours even when the company threatens to let me go

And your faithfulness and love is better than any bonus…and your retirement plan; it beats any 401k!

And finally GOD when it is all said and done, I’ll be working for you a whole lot longer than any employer and for that I am thankful and I bless your name

Amen

Best Riddle

Note:  Below is one of my absolute favorites...

A man and his son were driving along when they were involved in a terrible accident.  After being rushed to the hospital by ambulance, the father had a few bumps and bruises, but was otherwise not hurt.  Unfortunately, his son was in critical condition and would required emergency surgery.  The man signed all of the necessary consent forms and the boy was quickly taken to surgery.  The old, grey haired surgeon took one look at the boy and said, "I can not operate on my own son."

Question:  Can you explain this story?  When you give up, pan down for the answer.....

Answer:  The surgeon was a woman!  The boy's mother.  95% of those who try to answer this, never imagine an "old, grey-haired surgeon" to be a woman.

* Note:  To me, a surgeon represents one of great skill, and "old and grey-haired" represents one with years of experience in their profession.  Why not a woman?  This is an exercise that speaks to the hang-ups and stereotypes that we still seem to have when it comes to gender.  Love this riddle!

My Aunt Juanita sent this to me after a conversation we had on the passing of my mother.   It was powerful to me.  I hope that it helps you to put life, and the time you spend in this life, in total perspective.

Best Woman's Empowerment

tc_6

As time and nature work their changes and their mysteries upon a
woman, Sisters are the mainstays of her life.

THIS SAYS IT ALL:  Time passes -- Life happens -- Distance separates......Children grow up.....Jobs come and go........Love waxes and wanes........Men may disappoint..........
Hearts break..........Parents die.........Colleagues forget favors..........Careers end.

BUT.........Sisters are there, no matter how much time and how many miles are between you.  A girlfriend is never farther away than needing her can reach.

When you have to walk that lonesome valley and you have to walk it by yourself:

The women in your life will be on the valley's rim. Cheering you on. Praying for you. Pulling for you. Intervening on your behalf, and waiting with open arms at the valley's end.

Sometimes, they will even break the rules and walk beside you.  Or come in and carry you out!

Girlfriends, Daughters, Granddaughters, Daughters-in-law, Sisters, Sisters-in-law, Mothers, Grandmothers, Aunts, Nieces, Cousins, extended family, etc., all bless our life!

The world wouldn't be the same without women.  And Neither would you. When we began this adventure called womanhood, we had no idea of the incredible joys or sorrows that lay ahead.  Nor did we know how much we would need each other. Every day, we need each other still.

Pass this on to all the women who help make your life meaningful.  I just did.
