The National Pan-Hellenic Council, Inc. (NPHC) is an umbrella organization for nine historically black, international Greek lettered fraternities and sororities. Each of the nine NPHC organizations evolved during a period when African-Americans were being denied essential rights and privileges afforded other college students. NPHC was formed as a permanent organization on May 10, 1939 on the campus of Howard University, in Washington, D.C. Click on an organization to learn more about it or check out our Greek Calendar! You couldn’t have asked for a better afternoon. The sun was shining; a slight cool breeze was in the air…it was a picture perfect afternoon for a homecoming celebration.
While many packed the stands to enjoy the football game, others walked the campus sight seeing, and not just looking at the new and beautiful buildings that are under construction.
I sat amongst the crowd as the game became a nail biter in the final minutes of the 4th quarter. Howard tied the game. That moment took me back several years as I sat in that same stand hoping that my Morgan State Bears would win our homecoming. The final play…the ball was kicked and yes…Moooorrrrrgan State wins!
As the crowds began leaving the stands, it was time for people to hug, reunite with friends and of course to check out all the Greeks that were back on the yard.
I’m proud of the history that all sororities and fraternities share. It’s just something about seeing them step and sing that attract many to the various locations on the campus to watch. Yeah you have those playful moments of my sorority or fraternity is better than yours, but the bottom line…we are all connected at the roots and branch out to the various leaves that grow on the tree…Public Service.
So here’s a big shout out to all the Greeks who celebrated homecoming 2007, and a special shout out to my Alpha Gamma Sorors of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated.
After I joined my sisters in our circle, I walked around to catch some lasting memories and hope you enjoy these photos.
See everyone next year!
