Snoop Dogg to Remix ABC Soap Opera Theme

By The Associated Press

NEW YORK  --  Snoop Dogg is bringing some street cred to "One Life to Live."

The 36-year-old rapper will make an extended cameo on the ABC soap opera to perform two songs from his new album, "Ego Trippin'," at the Ultra Violet club in the town of Llanview, the network said Thursday.

Snoop's episodes will air May 8 and May 9, and feature his re-mixed version of the show's theme song. He will also act in scenes.

"I've been a fan of `One Life to Live' since I was a baby," said Snoop, who's set to perform "Sensual Seduction" and "Life of Da Party."

"My momma always had it on the tube in tha crib growing up. The opportunity to change up the theme song and give it some of my flavor will make the show the Life of The Party."

Mary J. Blige, Nelly Furtado, Chris Botti, Erykah Badu, Timbaland and Keri Hilson have also performed on the show.

Rapper The Game Released From Jail

By The Associated Press

LOS ANGELES  --  The Game is back in play. Los Angeles County sheriff's records show that the rapper was released from jail just before midnight on Sunday after serving just eight days of a 60 day sentence.

The 28-year-old entertainer -- whose real name is Jayceon Taylor -- turned himself in March 2nd at the Twin Towers Correctional Facility.

He was convicted last month of possession of a firearm in a school zone after being accused of pulling a gun on a player from an opposing team during a pickup game at a South Los Angeles school nearly a year ago.

The Game's lawyer Shawn Chapman Holley didn't immediately return a phone message left seeking details about her client's early release.

Bobby Brown Won't Face Charges After Police Found Cocaine on Him
Bobby Brown arrives for a charity concert Feb. 22, 2007, in Los Angeles. For the second time in a year, Brown has been arrested while in Massachussets to watch his daughter at a cheerleading competition. Singer Bobby Brown will not face criminal charges after police in Massachusetts said they found a small amount of cocaine in his possession.

Brown's attorney said Tuesday a Brockton District Court clerk magistrate found no probable cause to issue a criminal complaint, but recommended that Brown volunteer to mentor young people, which Brown wanted to do anyway.

Brown agreed to a year's community service and his attorney said if no other issues arise over the next year, the matter will be struck from the docket.

The case began when police responding to a disturbance at a Brockton hotel on December 1. They said they found the 39-year-old Brown sitting in an SUV in the parking lot, with cocaine in his possession.

The Boston native is the former husband of singer Whitney Houston and stars in the CMT Network show "Gone Country." While married to Houston, they lived in a home north of Atlanta.

From Football to singing…meet the new Darnerien McCants

By Micheline Bowman

On the field he played for NFL teams like the Philadelphia Eagles and the Washington Redskins.  While he continues to pursue his sports passion playing professional football, his off the field hobbies have turned into a new passion and future career.

Meet Darnerien McCants the professional football player, Darnerien McCants the artist and Darnerien McCants the R&B singer. Now don’t be quick to judge that he’s just another athlete trying to break into the music world.  I think Darnerien has done his homework and realizes that it’s not going to be easy getting into the music game. He has a genuine love for music and takes his singing career seriously as he devotes hours to rehearsals and performing at various venues allowing audiences to see and hear another side of him.

I had the opportunity to see him perform live in December 2007 outside.  Yes outside!  It couldn’t have been more than 32 degrees at the time.  I knew that he was serious about his music when he agreed to perform for the annual community event Fox 5 in D.C. sponsors each year. The outside elements were very cold, but from the time he grabbed the mic, and the camera was on him…he was in his element.  Singing and performing just came naturally to Darnerien.

The television viewers had the chance to see and hear him and I wanted the web readers to have that same opportunity.  So I introduce to you, the myvoicedc readers…Darnerien McCants.

Micheline- When most people think about you, they think football but you have been doing more than that I’ve noticed.

Darnerien- Yeah right now I’m working on my music career and doing some modeling.

Micheline- Wow that’s a different direction than playing football…how did the music side of you come about?

Darnerien- On Saturday’s when we would clean the house…V103 would be on the radio and I remember growing up and hearing my aunt singing Patti Labelle and other songs.  It was like music was always just a part of me from a child.

Micheline- So would you say your first talent was music and not sports?

Darnerien- Well I started playing sports at age 9 and singing in school around the same time. I would always have solos in school and I use to mimic Michael Jackson.  I remember when I was in the 5th grade and I had a winter concert, my mom said I couldn’t go and I just stopped singing. It was during the last few years in college that I started to pick it up again. Most people didn’t know I could sing.  My two best friends didn’t even know.  Most people thought I was crazy and talking to myself.

Micheline- I hear you’re also an artist?

Darnerien- Yeah…art is another thing that is kind of just in me. Coach Jimmy Ray, (Former Redskins Offensive Coordinator) he said something that touched me. “Never be ashamed of your talents.  Don’t waste them because you shame God of your ability for blessing you with the talents.”  I knew that I wanted to sing and show folks that I’m a talented singer, artist and football player.  I’ve been drawing since I was a baby…that is my natural talent.  I could draw anything I saw.  The hardest part for me was to draw images in my head.  When Coach Spurrier came to the team I released my art work. Then the next year I started balling on the field so it made it twice as easy to bring the music out.

Raheem DeVaughn's Soul Sizzles on Album
Raheem Devaughn

By NEKESA MUMBI MOODY
AP Music Writer

Raheem DeVaughn, "Love Behind the Melody" (Jive)

After he released his debut album "The Love Experience," Raheem DeVaughn drew a lot of comparisons to the gifted but now missing-in-action D'Angelo. Like the neosoul king, DeVaughn's love songs were passionate and sexy, and his sensual tenor could persuade a nun to do improper things.

On his new album, "Love Behind the Melody," the comparisons are even more evident, especially on the slow groove "Love Drug," on which he likens his lover to cocaine in her potency and addictive powers. ("Brown Sugar," anyone?) Yet DeVaughn is not just some D'Angelo wannabe. As "Love Behind the Melody" makes clear, while the singer-songwriter is influenced by the likes of D'Angelo, Prince and others, he's carving out his own sound.

DeVaughn blends smooth R&B grooves with a touch of hip-hop on songs like hot track "Friday (Shut the Club Down)," which blends part of the Temptations' "My Girl," and the pulsating "Energy" featuring OutKast's Big Boi. But he also offers dreamy bedroom ballads like the retro, luscious-sounding "Mo Better," and "Marathon" featuring Floetry. And "Butterflies" is in a category all its own, an airy guitar-centric mix of soul and rock.

DeVaughn co-wrote all the album's 17 tracks: They are elevated by well-crafted lyrics free of the cliched writing that tends to bog down many love songs. While relationships and love are the central themes of the disc, the songs are not monolithic. "Quiet Storm" slow jams; he mixes different soundscapes so each track offers something new for the ear to discover.

With the exception of John Legend and perhaps a few others, there aren't a lot of strong male singers in R&B who offer more than ghetto love songs and sex soliloquies. DeVaughn's voice is a sorely needed on who fills the void that D'Angelo, Maxwell and others left in their absence.

CHECK THIS TRACK OUT: The piano-based "Woman" is an uplifting track that pays tributes to all women, including your baby's mama, as DeVaughn would say.

A CONVERSATION WITH J. HOLIDAY
By Micheline Bowman

Before I get into this story, I have to tell you what happened prior to my conversation with J. Holiday. Yes…D.C.’s own R&B sensation J. Holiday. I wanted to have an in person interview with him, but his label said he was only available for a phone interview.  So when I left work that evening, I knew I needed to prepare myself for my phone call.   I got into my car, turned on the radio…guess what’s playing? “Bed” I’m singing along until the commercial and I flip to another station and “Suffocate” is playing. Okay…2 songs on two different stations.  I guess I need to think about my phone interview now and not later. Read full article...
