A Minority, Veteran Owned Small Business That Is Succeeding
Overlooking a picturesque Northern Virginia landscape on the breathtaking skyline of Northern Virginia is the corporate headquarters of New Age Protection, Inc. a minority, veteran owned small business managed and spearheaded by three energetic military veterans. These three veterans are Ronn Wright, President; Floyd Dortch, Vice President; and Lawrence Burns the Chief Executive Officer who is credited with developing the company name. Wright served several years in the Army, Burns was in the Navy, and Dortch retired after serving over 20 years in the Army. While on active duty, their military occupational specialty was intelligence-related, this also led them to similar employment in the same company as civilians. After working together, they brainstormed ideas and concepts and started New Age Protection in September 2003.
New Age is a certified 8(a) Small Disadvantaged Business with the Small Business Administration. It is currently staffed with 141 employees and consists of 85% veterans. Due to the flexibility needs of the company, all employees have security clearances with either secret, top secret, or top secret/sensitive compartmented information access or eligibility. New Age is a performance-based company that is built on their reputation by the employees and customers. Employees are a valuable asset to the company and they receive benefits and incentives to let them know how much they are appreciated.
New Age is licensed to do business throughout the metropolitan area, Delaware, Florida, North Carolina, Alabama, Georgia, Pennsylvania, and Michigan. Although much of their work now is with federal government contracts, they hope to expand and diversify business opportunities into the commercial area, schools, and churches.
Some of the challenges they faced as a new business were getting established as a new company, developing financial structure, and determining the company infrastructure. Their mission is solid, to become the premier provider of mission critical solutions by providing protection support services, logistical support, management support, and professional services to the client. These skills are reflective of the skills they gained while in the military. By utilizing their vast experience and knowledge, they provide on-site customer assessments and offer recommendations to improve operations based on customer needs. As professional, goal-oriented businessmen, they continue to draw upon their collective thinking, past experiences, and good business decisions and now have a five year success plan in place. Their goal is to remain competitive with the larger companies and face the challenges of sustaining the company by remaining vigilant, aggressively growing, and staying attractive in the market.
These three entrepreneurs are truly aspiring men who believe in setting their goals and making dreams reality. They avail themselves to opportunities to share their business challenges, pitfalls, and success stories with others who are interested in starting a business. It is their objective to see others succeed and to help them avoid some of the same mistakes that they made.
As we pay tribute and honor to our soldiers and veterans on Veteran's Day, Wright, Dortch, and Burns extend the following heartfelt messages to our soldiers. Wright shares that he is extremely proud of our servicemen and women who are protecting our country and hopes that they will return safely home. Dortch wants our soldiers to know that he understands and knows how difficult it is to be away from home, family, friends, and loved ones. Burns encourages our soldiers to keep their spirits up and to come home to their loved ones because he knows that it is difficult to leave loved ones behind. Additionally, they would like for our soldiers to know that they can be successful after they complete their military service. These three veterans recognize the accomplishments, commitment, and dedication that soldiers and veterans make for our country. They continue to give back to the community by embracing fellow veterans at military job fairs, by participating in Transition Assistance Program Seminars at various military bases throughout the metropolitan region, and they look forward to hiring more veterans at the company.
